Welcome to beautiful Aulestad – one of Norway’s best preserved artist homes.
In literary, cultural and political sense Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson was a great cultural personality of his time.
He fought for freedom and justice for the oppressed and for the small nations’ right to freedom and independence.
Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson wrote novels, plays and a great number of poems, as well as thousands of letters, articles and speeches.
Bjørnson has written our national anthem ”Ja, vi elsker”.
In 1903 Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson was awarded the Nobel prize in Literature for the whole body of his work.
Aulestad has a beautiful garden that is an experience in itself. The garden is open to the public all day.

At the top of the birch avenue is the magnificent barn. Here you will find both regular and temporary exhibitions.
Drengestua Café has a permanent exhibition by the painter Jacob Weidemann. There is also an exhibition of Bjørnson’s
carriages, including the landau carriage that King Haakon VII used during his coronation journey.

Tickets and museum shop is located in the tourist information by the main road. To visit the café or to take a stroll in the
garden is free of charge.

Approximately 18 km from Lillehammer, follow signs the main road E6 north of Lillehammer. From E6 take highway 225 towards Gausdal, and follow the road past the center of Follebu to Aulestad. Free parking lots by the road. There are bus contection from the Railway station in Lillehammer.
