About

Ski the Peer Gynt Trail

Northwest of the Olympic city of Lillehammer lies the famous Peer Gynt Trail, named after the legendary Norwegian hero immortalized by Henrik Ibsen. This classic cross-country skiing route stretches for 8 days and 80 km, from Espedalen to Skeikampen, in the heart of what is known as Peer Gynt Country.

Along the way, you’ll glide through a varied winter landscape of birch forests, traditional Norwegian farmsteads, frozen lakes, and wide-open horizons.

The Peer Gynt Trail is an excellent choice for those looking for a slightly more challenging, yet still very enjoyable, skiing holiday in Norway. The trail consists of groomed and well-marked cross-country tracks, suitable for those who have some prior skiing experience. The trail runs about 700 - 1500 meters above sea level. The daily stages are relatively short, and provide opportunities for interesting detours. The entire Peer Gynt trail is frequently groomed and regular cross-country skis can be used.

On clear days, the route offers uninterrupted views of the majestic peaks in Jotunheimen, Rondane, and Dovrefjell National Parks – creating a dramatic contrast to the gentle mountain terrain you ski through. If this is your first ski holiday in Norway, expect to be amazed by both the scenery and the quality of the trails.

During the tour, you’ll stay in comfortable hotels and ski resorts with long traditions in winter tourism. Each destination offers a warm welcome after a day on the trail, complete with hearty meals and cozy surroundings.

While you are out skiing, your luggage is transported to the next accommodation. You only have to bring a small backpack with extra clothes and food. Although the trail is marked, you should be familiar with using maps in addition to the tour description.
