Vinstra is a cultural center and the city in the middle of Peer Gynt's kingdom. The city is in the middle of Gudbrandsdalen and is the center of interest between two other important places in Norway, namely Oslo and Trondheim. The city has about 2500 inhabitants, and here you will find most of the qualities a small town can offer with cozy shopping malls, shopping streets, green parks and not least the beautiful old railway station in the center.
Across the core of Vinstra flows the river Gudbrandsdalslågen. At Vinstra you meet the rural and urban areas, and the city is surrounded by beautiful small villages and easily accessible nature experiences. Here is the short distance to the nearby mountain areas such as Kvamsfjellet and Gålå, and there are many opportunities for cycling, hiking, rafting, cross country skiing and alpine skiing.
"If it may interest them to know, then Peer Gynt is a real person who has lived in God's Valley."
In 2017 it was the 150th anniversary of Peer Gynt. Vinstra is a cultural city, and the fan of the culture is Peer Gynt, who is also on the shelf at Vinstra Station. Why is Peer so important to Vinstra? Yes because Peer comes from Vinstra, or more specifically Sødorp, one of Vinstra's more beautiful 'districts'. It was here that Henrik Ibsen in 1862 found the inspiration of his great writer of a world citizen. Every year in August, "Peer Gynt" is set up on the outdoor scene at Gålåvatnet, and Peer, riding on his fantasy fox of a reinbukk, is and becomes Vinstra's foremost trademark.
The home of the "Gudbrandsdalsost"
"Gudbrandsdalsosten" or "Brunosten" - brown cheese - is a traditiomal Norwegian cheese. Gudbrandsdalsosten was found at Solbråsætra in Fron, later produced by Vinstra dairy. Today it is still produced in Gudbrandsdalen. The oyster was also found in Gudbrandsdalen and is today produced at Ringebu. These two form a good story about local food.
