About

Follow the route for the Furusjøen Rundt ski race around Kvamsfjellet – the gateway to Rondane National Park, and one of Norway's most beautiful mountain areas.  Ski through a winter landscape ranging from forest-clad hills to bare mountains.

From the starting point, ski across lake Årvillingen in a north-easterly direction, navigate the gentle downhill section towards Vassmillom, continue towards Kringseter, and embark on the first climb up to lake Smukksjøen.

As you reach Vassmillom, you have the option to ski directly to lake Vålåsjøen and thus reduce the distance by 8–9 km (signposted Furusjøen Rundt 20 km and/or Vålåsjøen). From lake Smukksjøen, the trail leads down the Steindalen valley and continues on to lake Vålåsjøen. It then follows gentle and varied terrain towards Pungen mountain farm, past the hamlet of Luseby, and then down Frylia along lake Furusjøen. You have now reached an area of outstanding natural beauty by Rondane National Park. The national park border is to the east – further up the mountain side. By Frylisætra, you have the option to leave the trail and return to the starting point across Hovde. Alternatively, if you have skied all the way down to Frybrua, you can return to the starting point by crossing the Hovdemyra marsh. Frybrua bridge is your last opportunity for a shorter trip (unless you turn around). The trail continues down the Frydalen valley.

From river Frya, there is a steep climb up towards Koltjønnhaugen before the trail continues towards Indre Fiskedalen – an area with small pastures still in use during summer. The trail then turns sharply right (90 degrees) and leads back towards Furusjøen and Kvamsfjellet. There is slightly hilly terrain up the Bergemillomsdalen valley to Hovdemyra. The stretch along lake Storvatnet in Bergemillomsdalen is often chillier than other parts of the trail, and if you arrive in the afternoon the sun has disappeared from large parts of Bergemillom.

From Hovdemyra, the trail leads west towards Årvillingen and back to where you started. This trip offers plenty of opportunities for poling, and is considered “perfect” training for the Vasaloppet race.

As you return, we highly recommend a visit to Ruststugusetra and Målfrid’s homemade buns. Large and scrumptious!

This is a trip for experienced skiers and those who are looking to cover some distance, but it also offers numerous opportunities to reduce the distance along the way.

Good advice
Follow the signs "Furusjøen Rundt 45 km". Weather conditions may change during the trip – remember to obey by the mountain code. This trip is recommended for experienced skiers, but everyone can ski parts of the trail as it connects with other trail networks at Kvamsfjellet – Mysusæter and Sødorpfjellet.
