The story of DS Skibladner

DS Skibladner, or "Mjøsas Hvite Svane", as it is also called, is the world's oldest operative wheelbarrow in regular traffic, and was built in the period 1854-1856.  The ship was built for passenger and freight traffic on Norway's largest lake Mjøsa. Skibladner is now primarily a tourist ship. Skibladner enables the traveler, in full moon, to experience the moorland as it should be seen - from the sea side. Skibladner is a national and international cultural history memory and one of Norway's leading sights.

Salmon and strawberries

A trip with "Skibladner" is a sail for all senses. The ship's restaurant has a first class reputation as a dining place with food culture and interior decoration, attracting over 20,000 guests during a regular season. Here you can indulge in a delicious meal. In the "Skibladner" venerable restaurant, a 160-year tradition is held. Here you will find the famous salmon and strawberry menu in the first-class food salon.

Did you know that Ibsen traveled with "Skibladner" on his journey to Gudbrandsdalen where he received inspiration for "Peer Gynt"?

In 1862 Ibsen traveled on an inspirational journey to collect myths and folk tales. The journey of inspiration went through Gudbrandsdalen and beyond on Sognefjellet to Lysterfjorden in Sogn, across Lærdal to Sunnfjord and Nordfjord and to Vestnes in Møre og Romsdal. Probably it was on the journey through Gudbrandsdalen that Ibsen was told stories and poems about the local Per Gynt from Vinstra. He started his journey by train from Oslo to Minnesund, then he took a steamship to Lillehammer. Every year you can experience "Peer Gynt" at Gålå, inspired by Ibsen's journey.
